The Forest Department of the Government of West Bengal is set to organize the Van Mahotsav festival from July 14 to 20, 2024, across the state. According to the Forest Department, the state-level program will be inaugurated on July 14 at Eden Garden in Kolkata. Additionally, 23 programs will be held at the district level and three at the sub-division level to promote environmental awareness and tree plantation.

State-Level Program at Eden Garden

The principal event of Van Mahotsav will take place at Eden Garden, where the state’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Forest Force Head Neeraj Singhan will flag off three floats from Aranya Bhavan in Kolkata. These floats are designed to spread awareness messages about the importance of preserving greenery and will function as mobile units for distributing saplings in various parts of Kolkata, including Central Kolkata, North Kolkata, South Kolkata, New Town, and Salt Lake.

Focus on Plantation and Sapling Distribution

The Van Mahotsav celebrations will primarily focus on plantation initiatives, the distribution of saplings, and joint patrolling in forests with members of the Joint Forest Management Committees. The Forest Department has made arrangements for the free distribution of saplings from all forest nurseries. In urban areas, individuals will receive two saplings per person, while in rural areas, five saplings per person will be provided.

Urban Greenery Programme

Special emphasis will be placed on involving housing societies in plantation activities as part of the Urban Greenery Programme. During the period from July 14 to August 31, 2024, housing societies will be eligible to receive one sapling per flat owner free of cost, subject to the availability of suitable planting areas. This initiative aims to enhance urban greenery and encourage residents to contribute to the environment by planting trees.

Neeraj Singhan’s Message

Neeraj Singhan, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, emphasized the significance of Van Mahotsav in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. He stated, “Van Mahotsav is not just a festival; it is a movement to reconnect people with nature and highlight the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance. Our goal is to involve the community actively in our green initiatives and foster a culture of conservation and environmental responsibility.”

Community Participation

The Forest Department is also encouraging community participation through joint patrolling efforts in collaboration with Joint Forest Management Committees. These efforts aim to protect forested areas from illegal activities and ensure the successful implementation of plantation initiatives.
