PlayStation Plus raises prices in 2026 while Xbox cuts them
PlayStation Plus increases prices in 2026 just as Microsoft cuts Xbox Game Pass. We explain how much you pay now and what it means for gamers
Sony just confirmed a price increase for PlayStation Plus in multiple regions, and the timing couldn't be worse, or better, depending on how you look at it. Because just at the same time that PS Plus subscribers see their bill grow, Microsoft decided to do exactly the opposite with Xbox Game Pass.
How much PS Plus increases in the US and the world
In the United States, the new annual prices for PlayStation Plus looked like this:
What this means is a real increase that is felt more at the higher levels, where the user was already paying a considerable amount. In Latin America, the annual Essential plan rose to $64.99. In Canada, the Extra tier jumped from $154.99 to $189.99 CAD. And in markets like Türkiye, the blow was even harder, with increases of up to 55% in the most expensive tier.
The changes were not immediate for everyone. Active subscribers did not see the adjustment until their next renewal date, starting June 24, 2025.
Sony doesn't explain why it's raising prices, and that says something too
Sony has not given a clear official justification. The company has indirectly mentioned the increase in component prices and the costs of maintaining a growing game library, but without numbers or concrete commitments to improve.
And that is a problem of perception. Because when you raise the price without explaining what it improves for the user, you are betting on brand loyalty to withstand the blow. So far, it has worked. But the room for maneuver is reduced each cycle.
It is not an isolated case. The PS5 also increased its price in the US during 2025, going from $499 to $549. What we see is a more aggressive monetization pattern across the entire PlayStation platform, not just the subscription service.
Xbox cuts the price of Game Pass and puts direct pressure on Sony
In April 2026, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 per month, a $7 cut. PC Game Pass also dropped, from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. The announcement came directly from Xbox Wire, presented as part of new Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma's commitment to “reconnect with gamers.”
With more than 34 million active subscribers at its peak, Microsoft isn't improvising. The play is clear:
Simply put, Xbox is buying value perception at the exact moment Sony opens the door with a price hike.
How much does PlayStation Plus Essential cost per year in 2026? In the United States, PS Plus Essential per year costs $79.99. In Latin America the price is $64.99 dollars annually. Prices vary by region and may change at any time based on Sony policy.
Is Xbox Game Pass cheaper than PlayStation Plus now? Yes. Following the April 2026 cut, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $22.99 per month. Compared to PS Plus Extra and Premium, which exceed $11-13 per month in their annual equivalent, Game Pass Ultimate offers more catalog at a higher monthly price, but with a clearer value proposition after the drop.
Does the PS Plus increase already apply to my active account? It depends on when you subscribed. Users with an active subscription at the time of the announcement did not see the change immediately. The new price was applied on the next renewal date, starting June 24, 2025.
If Sony doesn't start justifying these increases with real, visible improvements to the catalog, Xbox could have its best chance in years to steal subscribers. Price matters, but perceived value matters more. And right now, Microsoft is handling it better. Are you going to reconsider your subscription?
