Catherine Zeta-Jones says goodbye to Bonnie Tyler with an emotional message: “I am heartbroken”
The actress shared an unpublished photograph of her wedding with Michael Douglas and remembered her cousin-in-law as "an extraordinary woman with an incomparable voice"
The iconic Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler died at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal, where she was receiving treatment for an illness, as confirmed by her family. The news generated a wave of reactions, but without a doubt the most emotional goodbye was that of Catherine Zeta-Jones, who maintained a close family bond with the artist.
Bonnie Tyler had been married for more than 50 years to Robert Sullivan, cousin of the Oscar-winning actress. This relationship made the singer a constant presence in the life of Zeta-Jones, who always considered her part of his inner circle.
Through Instagram, Catherine Zeta-Jones shared a photograph with Bonnie Tyler taken the night before her wedding to Michael Douglas, held in New York in 2000. In the image, both appear smiling and elegantly dressed, in what was one of the most special moments for the actress.
"I am heartbroken with the news that our dearest Bonnie Tyler has passed away. Bonnie was married to my cousin and has been a very important part of my life," the actress wrote alongside the photograph.
An unforgettable performance
Zeta-Jones revealed that Tyler was not only invited to their wedding, she also performed during the celebration. “He sang there and shook everything,” the actress recalled.
The actress wanted to go beyond artistic recognition and highlighted the human side of Bonnie Tyler: "An extraordinary woman with an incomparable voice. A unique artist, who could easily have been a comedian because she was one of the funniest people I met."
"Thank you, Bonnie, for the joy you brought to so many people. Rest easy, beautiful lady," Zeta-Jones concluded in her publication.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in the Welsh town of Skewen, Bonnie Tyler always maintained her characteristic accent and became one of the great cultural ambassadors of Wales. Her hoarse and powerful voice, the result of an operation on her vocal cords in the 70s, became her hallmark and catapulted her to international fame with hits such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, “Holding Out for a Hero” and “It’s a Heartache”.
In addition to Zeta-Jones, other figures from the musical world such as Sir Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams expressed their sadness at the loss of the artist, while the British government and Welsh authorities highlighted her cultural legacy.
