Donald Trump affirms that Putin does not like Zelensky
Trump said that Putin does not want to see Zelensky, who requested security guarantees before a possible meeting with the Russian president
“We do not know "What security guarantees (would be implemented), because we haven't even discussed the details, and we'll see. First of all, Europe is going to give them significant security guarantees, and they should, because they're right there (next to Ukraine), but we're going to participate as reinforcements. We're going to help them," Trump explained to reporters in the Oval Office. Trump responded in this way to a reporter who asked him about the details of the plan that he himself has suggested and that includes possible US air support and a European contingent on Ukrainian territory after Kyiv and Moscow sign a peace agreement. Moscow has said that it will not accept such a mechanism under any circumstances, and this may be one of the reasons why Russia could be delaying a summit between Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that Trump is trying to push through. Putin seems not to want to hold a summit. Asked about the reasons why Putin seems to be showing signs of not wanting to hold such a summit, Trump responded that the The Russian president doesn’t want to see Zelensky “because he doesn’t like him.”
“The fact that he went to Alaska, our country, I think, was a great signal that he wants to do this,” Trump added, referring to the summit he held with Putin on August 15.
“It wasn’t easy for him to go to Alaska, you know, to come here. But the fact that he showed up for such a successful meeting, it was a very successful day for other issues,” the Republican said.
The president added that Washington and Moscow are also holding talks on nonproliferation and control of missile and nuclear weapons arsenals and the New START treaty, the only one still in force between the two countries, which expires in February 2026.
