After Jesus G. “Chuy” Garcia announced his early retirement as a member of the House of Representatives for Illinois' 4th Congressional District, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) endorsed his decision, recognizing his contributions during his six years in office.

On October 27, the 69-year-old politician, born in Durango, Mexico, submitted his application for reelection, but a month later announced his intention to retire at the end of his term.

The Democrat's main argument was that his cardiologist recommended he reduces his workload for health reasons.

Garcia also stated that his wife, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, asked him not to run for reelection and instead dedicate himself to care for his eight-year-old grandson, who was orphaned after the death of his daughter Rosa in 2023.

Through a statement, the CHC endorsed the decision of Chuy Garcia, whose career in American politics began in the Chicago City Council when he was elected councilman in 1986.

“The Congressional Hispanic Caucus strongly supports Congressman Chuy Garcia and his personal decision to leave Congress to prioritize his family.

Congressman Garcia has been a champion of justice and dignity for working families, immigrants, and communities in his district and across the country. His decision to focus on his wife's health, his own well-being, and the adoption of his young grandson reflects the values ??that our community honors and promotes. We respect these deeply personal considerations,” the statement reads.

However, the decision not to seek reelection also drew criticism for Garcia, as his swift appointment of his chief of staff to replace him was seen as a blow to democratic principles, at least from the perspective of fellow Democrat Raymond Anthony Lopez.

Councilman for District 15 in Chicago.

“For someone who claims to be above crony politics, someone who claims to champion progressive and inclusive politics… to pull off this maneuver that undermines the democratic process is, at best, hypocritical, and at worst, repugnant,” he emphasized.
