President of the New York Democratic Party refuses to support Zohran Mamdani's candidacy
Jay Jacobs, chairman of the New York Democratic Party, refuses to allow Zohran Mamdani to become a candidate for mayor
Jay Jacobs, chairman of the New York Democratic Party, refuses to support Zohran Mamdani's candidacy for mayor of the “City of Iron.”
During an interview with The Hill newspaper, the man who was re-elected to his position in September of last year said he disagreed with the Ugandan-born Democrat’s political vision and therefore does not support him as a mayoral candidate.
“Mr. Mamdani and I agree that America’s biggest problem is the continuing widening of income disparity in our nation. As for how to address it, we fundamentally disagree.
I reject the platform of the so-called ‘Democratic Socialists of America’ and do not believe it represents the principles, values, or policies of the Democratic Party. For these reasons, I will not support Mr. Mamdani for mayor of New York City,” he said.
Jay Jacobs was elected chairman of the state Democratic Party in 2019 and, since then, his work has been key to keeping the Republicans in check.
Contrary to the established position by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, to support Mamdani, the party leader would even be willing to resign his post if she were to pressure him to back the Muslim candidate.
“As I have expressed directly, I completely disagree with Mamdani’s views on the State of Israel, as well as certain key policy positions.
If the governor were ever to ask any state chair to resign, he should do so,” he said in a separate interview with Politico.
In this regard, Mike Gianaris, the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the New York Senate, lashed out at Jacobs for not rallying behind the candidate whom polls consistently show as the favorite to win next November’s elections.
“The chairman of the Democratic Party refuses to support the candidate clearly selected by the party’s voters."If he's not fulfilling the most basic responsibility of a party leader, what exactly is he doing there?" he said on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.
Earlier this summer, Zohran Mamdani surprisingly won the Democratic primaries, even beating former Mayor Andrew Cuomo.
