Chicago Mayor Signs an Order to Resist Trump Offensive Migratory
Mayor Brandon Johnson said the order is to combat a possible deployment of federal troops or law enforcement in Chicago
The mayor's order provides guidance and directives to the city's agencies and law enforcement amid the threat from the federal government that is part of Trump's crime-fighting policy.
The provision instructs all city departments not to cooperate with the federal government, preempting a possible militarization of the city.
"Today I am signing an executive order that will launch the 'Protecting Chicago' initiative," the Democratic mayor said at a press conference, explaining that the measure mandates that "the Chicago Police Department will not cooperate with military personnel in police patrols or in the enforcement of civil immigration law."
"We find ourselves in a position where we must take drastic and immediate measures to protect our people from federal overreach," Johnson said at the press conference.
This strategy, however, could be accompanied by an increase in ICE raids against undocumented immigrants.
“We don’t want to see tanks on our streets. We don’t want to see families torn apart. We don’t want grandmas thrown into the back of unmarked vans. We don’t want to see homeless Chicagoans harassed or disappeared by federal agents,” Johnson stressed.
He added that the order instructs the Department of Law “to pursue any and all legal mechanisms to hold this administration accountable for violating Chicagoans’ rights.”
The mayor indicated that this measure aligns with the interests of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, also a Democrat, and specified that he has been in contact with fellow Democrats in Los Angeles to find out what Chicago can expect.
In addition to doing so in the capital, the Trump administration already deployed thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles during the outbreak of protests against immigration raids last June.
Trump is “the greatest threat to our democracy that the history of our country has ever experienced,” Johnson declared in his address.
Earlier this week, Trump signed an executive order to establish “specialized units” in the National Guard to address crime in cities, although it is unclear how the order will work in practice.
On Friday, Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, told Fox News that the administration was considering taking action in Chicago.
“Chicago is coming, along with all the other sanctuary cities,” Homan said. “President Trump has pledged to focus on and prioritize sanctuary cities, because that’s where the problem lies.”
“Stand aside, because we will,” Homan said later, when asked about possible resistance from local officials.
