President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo called on the United States Government to ensure that immigration policies are applied with full respect for human rights and without criminalizing people for their immigration status. Her statements came after the death of a Mexican citizen was confirmed during an operation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) in Florida. During her morning conference at the National Palace, the president reiterated that Mexico does not share an immigration policy of President Trump that considers migration as a crime and maintained that any deportation procedure must be carried out in accordance with the law and respect for human dignity. "If there is a person who has committed a crime, then it should be prosecuted. But migration should not be carried out. "If a person, according to the laws of the United States, must be deported, it should be done within the framework of respect for human rights," he said.

Death of a Mexican confirmed after ICE operation in Florida

Sheinbaum's statements occurred after the death of a Mexican citizen who tried to escape during an immigration operation in Florida was confirmed.

The president explained that, according to the information provided by authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the compatriot ran to avoid being arrested and lost his life when he was run over while crossing a road.

“In an ICE operation he runs and, while crossing a street, he is run over,” he said.

Until now, Mexican authorities reported that the identity of the victim has not yet been publicly confirmed.

Mexico will follow up on the case through diplomatic channels

Sheinbaum indicated that this death will be incorporated into the diplomatic and legal actions that the Mexican Government maintains to protect fellow citizens facing immigration procedures in the United States.

He explained that the consular authorities already provide support and that the case will be part of the complaints that Mexico has promoted due to incidents recorded during ICE operations.

The president insisted that cooperation between both countries must prioritize the protection of the human rights of migrants, regardless of their legal situation.

Case joins other recent ICE-related deaths

The death of the Mexican in Florida occurs just a few days after the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who died after being shot by an ICE agent during an operation carried out in Houston, Texas.

Added to these facts is the case of Colombian citizen Joan Sebastián Guerrero, 26, who also recently lost his life during an incident with immigration authorities in Maine.

The cases have increased scrutiny on the procedures used by ICE during its operations in different regions of the United States.

Sheinbaum will raise the issue again with Donald Trump

The president acknowledged that she has not recently had a conversation with the US president, Donald Trump, although she announced that the situation of Mexican migrants will be one of the topics she will address when she talks with him again.

He recalled that the protection of compatriots has been a recurring issue in bilateral conversations and assured that Mexico will continue to defend respect for the human rights of its citizens abroad.

Mexico maintains complaints about deaths of fellow citizens

As part of the institutional response, the Government of Mexico reported that it has filed complaints with the United States Department of Justice for the deaths of Mexican citizens that occurred during immigration operations or while they remained in ICE custody.

In addition, it requested the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to collect information about these events and follow up on possible violations of the human rights of Mexican migrants in United States territory.
