The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, applauded the imposition of the 25% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on most imports from Brazil and said that the measure responds to the fact that the Government chaired by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has not negotiated “in good faith” with Washington.

The head of US diplomacy also stated that the Brazilian president's economic policies are “bad for Americans and bad for Brazilians” and blamed the Brazilian Government for not having achieved a trade understanding with the United States.

Rubio's statements come after the Trump Administration announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on most Brazilian imports, a measure that increases trade tension between Washington and Brasilia.

The US ambassador and trade representative, Jamieson Greer, stated that the new levies seek to protect US economic interests against trade practices that he considers unfair.

According to Greer, the negotiations held with Brazil over the last year failed to resolve the differences, although he assured that Washington keeps the door open to continue the dialogue.

Greer also accused Brazil of harming U.S. technology companies, backtracking on anti-corruption measures, and allowing Brazilian farmers to gain competitive advantages through the use of illegally deforested land, which he believes has made it difficult for U.S. workers, producers, and exporters to access the Brazilian market.

The investigation included formal consultations with the Government of Brazil, two public hearings, and the analysis of more than 360 written comments submitted by individuals and organizations.

In addition, 77 witnesses appeared at hearings held this month before the Trump Administration adopted the final measure.
