Trump promises “big announcement” on electoral integrity ahead of November elections
The president announced that his message to the nation will include a proposal on elections and other key issues.
Donald Trump announced that his message to the nation scheduled for next Thursday will include a “big announcement” related to electoral integrity, a topic that has occupied a central place in his political speech since the 2020 presidential elections.
During a meeting at the White House with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Ali al Zaidi, the president assured that electoral reform will be one of the priorities of his prime-time intervention.
"There is nothing more important, because without free and fair elections there is no country. We will also address other issues, but it will be a big announcement," Trump declared according to AP.
Electoral reform returns to the center of the debate
Although the president did not provide details about the content of his speech, various media outlets indicate that he will seek to promote the Save America bill, an initiative promoted by the White House to tighten the rules of participation in federal elections.
The proposal calls for requiring proof of citizenship and an official photo ID to register and vote. Republicans maintain that these measures will strengthen confidence in the electoral system, while Democratic legislators believe that they could hinder access to voting for millions of citizens.
The speech comes before the midterm elections
The announcement comes a few months before the legislative elections on November 3, in which Republican control of both chambers of Congress will be at stake.
Since his defeat against Joe Biden in 2020, Donald Trump has insisted, without presenting evidence, that there were irregularities in the electoral process. This position has made electoral integrity one of the main axes of its political agenda and its reform proposals.
In addition to the electoral issue, Trump is also expected to address the situation with Iran and other national and international political issues during his message.
