Trump says Renee Good was “very tough” in deadly operation in defense of ICE
The Trump administration has alleged that the ICE agent acted in self-defense and accused Good of trying to ram him with her truck
During an interview with CBS News, Trump said that Good was surely a good person, but that during her encounter with ICE on January 7, she acted in a “very rough” manner.
The US president's statement came in response to a question from the interviewer who asked what he would say to Good's father after the operation that resulted in his daughter's death.
“I bet that, under normal circumstances, she was a very solid, wonderful person. But, you know, her actions were quite rough,” he responded.
He defended ICE, which has increased the number of agents in the Minneapolis area as part of the government's broader deportation campaign.
The president stated that ICE is “working hard” to arrest and deport people, but that “their job is being made extremely difficult.” At the beginning of the week, the state of Minnesota sued the Trump Administration over the operation that resulted in Good's death, in a complaint that warns that “thousands of masked and armed agents have terrorized the Twin Cities by conducting militarized raids and dangerous, illegal, and unconstitutional arrests in public spaces, including schools and hospitals.” The state is referring to the shooting by an ICE agent that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on January 7 and is asking for an end to ICE operations in Minnesota, claiming that it has the “inviolable” sovereign authority to protect the “health and well-being” of its residents. A poll conducted Tuesday by YouGov and The Economist showed that 46% of Americans Support abolishing ICE, following Good's death, in a poll that gathered responses from 1,602 people were interviewed virtually in the three days following the death of the 37-year-old woman.
