A confusion puts Heung-min Son as an “eligible” player for the USMNT
Los Angeles City Councilwoman unclear on how international soccer works. Heather Hutt hopes Son will represent the U.S.
Heung-min Son arrived in Major League Soccer as one of the most important signings for Los Angeles FC and American soccer in general. At his official presentation, the South Korean was welcomed by City Councilwoman Heather Hutt. Son received the "pressure" to lead the United States in the 2026 World Cup.
As a reason for the South Korean's arrival at Los Angeles FC, Heather Hutt was in charge of welcoming him. Son is a highly regarded footballer, as demonstrated by all the hype surrounding his signing.
"How smart is LAFC? Let's move on because this is the right time to bring in the right person," Heather Hutt began in a speech that seemed controlled.
However, the Los Angeles city councilwoman mixed club football with international football. Heather Hutt encouraged Heung-min Son to lead the United States national team to victory at the 2026 World Cup.
“And without pressure, but when the World Cup comes around, we expect a victory here in Los Angeles for the United States, right? And that’s why we’re here to support them and achieve that,” Hutt said at the presentation conference.
MLS and awkward questions
This isn’t the first time that people in the United States have confused soccer with both club and national team football. In 2017, Bastian Schweinsteiger joined the Chicago Fire of the MLS. At the presentation conference, a journalist asked the German world champion about the club's chances of winning the World Cup.
"With your addition to this team, is it expected that there will be a clear path for Chicago's aspirations in the World Cup?" was the question.
However, this question was quickly corrected by the Chicago Fire sporting director who was standing next to the German midfielder. The manager interpreted the question by indicating that they were referring to the MLS Cup.
