Denzel Perryman released: Will not face charges after arrest in Los Angeles
The Chargers linebacker had been arrested for assault weapons possession, but the prosecutor office did not file charges
Denzel Perryman, linebacker for the Los Angeles Chargers, was released on Monday after being arrested Friday night during a traffic stop that led to firearms possession charges. Despite initial felony charges, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office ultimately did not file criminal charges against him, according to jail records. The arrest occurred after a vehicle code violation. During a search of the car, officers found five weapons, including two assault weapons, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Perryman, 32, was booked into jail without bail on a felony charge related to possession of a prohibited weapon. However, his legal situation took a turn this Monday at noon, when he was released without charges being filed. According to records, the case will be recorded as an arrest without charges being filed, although the investigation is ongoing. Neither the prosecutor's office nor the Chargers have offered official comment. Nor has the player's agent issued any new statements beyond the previous statement in which he asked for respect for the legal process. An arrest that shook the team before the start of the season. The arrest comes just weeks before the start of the 2025 NFL season. Perryman, who was drafted by the Chargers in 2015 while still in San Diego, had just rejoined the team for what would have been his tenth professional season.
He previously played for the Las Vegas Raiders and the Houston Texans, particularly standing out in 2021, when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. In total, he has 717 tackles, 7.5 sacks, five interceptions, and four forced fumbles in his career.
The player's entourage has insisted on his commitment on and off the field. His agent, Ron Butler, described him as father, teammate, and dedicated professional. In statements previously to NFL Network, Butler also said, "We are confident that the matter will be resolved fairly and in accordance with the law."
