Donnarumma asked for a farewell from PSG and Luis Enrique assumes responsibility for his exit
Spanish coach Luis Enrique justifies the exclusion of the Italian goalkeeper before the European Super Cup against Tottenham
Gianluigi Donnarumma broke the silence. The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) goalkeeper posted a farewell message on Tuesday after Luis Enrique left him out of the squad for the European Super Cup. The Italian, whose contract expires in 2026, refused to renew and now hopes, at least, to step foot at the Parc des Princes again "to say goodbye properly" to the fans.
The goalkeeper's absence is not minor. Since arriving on a free transfer from Milan in 2021, Donnarumma has been key to the French club's recent successes.
But this time, his name was conspicuous by its absence from the squad to face Tottenham in dine. Luis Enrique explained that the decision was "100%" his and that he is looking for a goalkeeper with "different characteristics," which is why they signed Frenchman Lucas Chevalier, formerly of Lille.
A bitter goodbye and a direct justification
Donnarumma's message, addressed to PSG fans, reflected both disappointment and gratitude. "From the first day I arrived, I gave everything on and off the pitch to earn a place and defend the goal. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group," he wrote. He also dedicated words to his teammates, whom he called his "second family." Luis Enrique, for his part, was complimentary of the goalkeeper, whom he described as an "exceptional goalkeeper and person," but insisted that his decision fits the profile required by his current project. "That's the life of a top-level footballer... these decisions have to do with what my team needs," he stressed. The Asturian coach avoided blaming a lack of preparation after the holidays - PSG only returned to training a week ago - and warned that Tottenham will be a difficult opponent. He even revealed that the English club was "an option" before signing for Paris.in a gesture of respect toward his next opponent.
