“We had 13 shots, five or six of them on goal. "I'm happy with the possession and the scoring chances. We scored the goal and didn't back down; besides, we've had three clean sheets in three games and from there the team builds itself forward," said the 'Vasco' in a press conference.
With a goal from Alexis Vega and an own goal from Abdullah Madu, the Mexicans, defending champions, went from strength to strength after a weak first half and reached the round of the four finals.
"We maintained a defensive order that I liked, we were up to scratch and didn't give them a chance to surprise us," he added.
The next match is against Honduras.
Mexico will face Honduras in the round of the four finals, which surprised Panama and eliminated them in a penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw.
Aguirre recalled that the Hondurans play very well against Mexico and predicted a tough match in which his players must perform at their best to to be able to pass the test.
“We know each other very well. We have faced each other for many years; Mexico has lost in Honduras several times. I expect a hard-fought match; it will be on a neutral field and we will try to impose our style,” he stated.
Thanks to the Mexican fans
The coach reiterated his gratitude to the Mexican fans who gave their all to their team, some of whom came after long trips and expenses to support their players.
“Some come from a five-hour drive, pay their way to the stadium and the least we can do is give our all, run and fight,” he explained.
Aguirre believed that the Mexican national team is on the right track towards the 2026 World Cup, although there is still room for improvement.
“We are doing well, we will wait for the Cup to end and then continue the preparations for the World Cup,confident in continuing to grow,” he concluded.
