In the ongoing Khelo India Youth Games in Indore, 18-year-old Sonam became the champion with a national record in the 2000 meter steeplechase for girls. On Sunday, she became the Golden Girl in this competition by taking a time of 6:45:71 seconds. Sonam broke the 11 year old record. In the Youth Athletics Championship held in Lucknow in 2012, Parul Chowdhary set this record with 7:06:49 seconds.

Sonam's father Veer Singh, a resident of a small village in Bulandshahr, is a laborer in a brick kiln. Mother works in other people's fields. There are 9 people in the family and it is very difficult to survive at home. Sonam started her career in 2020 with hurdles. Seeing his stamina, the coach asked him to try his luck in steeplechase. Meanwhile the lockdown took place. Sonam, who came from Bulandshahr to practice in Delhi, had to work as a delivery girl to meet the expenses.

Due to poor financial condition, Sonam had to leave her studies after class VIII. The boys of the village used to run to prepare for joining the army. Seeing him, Sonam also started running. On winning the local tournament, he used to get one to two thousand rupees.

Sonam asked her father to get her coaching but seeing the condition of the house, he refused. After this coach Sanjeev Kumar became Sonam's support. With the desire to do something, Sonam ran many times even after being hungry. He had won the gold medal in the junior championship held in Assam last year.
