US jobless claims fall to 10-week low
For the second week of July, only 8,000 applications for unemployment benefits were registered
Although the unemployment rate continues above 4%, this Thursday the United States Department of Labor reported that for the second week of July only about 8,000 applications for unemployment benefits were registered, reaching 208,000 seasonal, one of the lowest levels in 10 weeks.
So far, weekly unemployment claims, a key indicator to closely understand the health of the labor market, remain stable in the seasonal range of 200,000 and 250,000 since the covid-19 pandemic.
However, in recent months, due to several factors such as rising inflation, geopolitical conflicts, higher tariff rates and the introduction of AI to certain industries, the labor market continues to show setbacks in general terms, especially in terms of hiring.
While the government reported that 57,000 jobs were added in June, many employers slowed their hiring pace, and this only indicates that companies are still cautious about increasing their workforce amid an uncertain economic situation.
On the other hand, since the beginning of this year, many companies in the technology sector such as Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Oracle, among others, have cut their workforces after innovating their operations with a strong investment in AI.
