Disney free? The platform analyzes this option
Disney is studying offering some of the Disney content for free. This is what is known about the possible new modality of the streaming platform
Paying for several streaming subscriptions each month has become an expense that is difficult to sustain for many households. In that scenario, Disney could be evaluating an alternative that would change the way millions of people access its catalog: offering some of the Disney content at no cost. Although the idea has not yet been officially confirmed, the project has already begun to generate expectations in various media.
According to information published by Business Insider, the company is analyzing the possibility of incorporating a free modality within Disney , which would allow certain content to be viewed without having to pay a subscription.
The report notes that the issue was mentioned by Adam Smith, Disney's director of Product and Technology, during a virtual meeting with employees held this week. However, according to people familiar with the matter cited by the media, the executive did not give details about a possible launch date, the operation of the service or the content it could include.
At the moment, Disney has not issued an official announcement regarding these reports, so the initiative remains a project under evaluation and not a final decision.
It is not known if the free access would be accompanied by advertisements, if it would only include some titles or if it would function as an option to attract new subscribers to paid plans.
If it finally comes to fruition, Disney would differentiate itself from many of the main subscription streaming platforms. Services like Netflix and Prime Video do not have a completely free modality, while Apple TV and Paramount only offer free access to some episodes of certain series.
For its part, Peacock began operations with a free version supported by advertising, but that option was no longer available in 2023. Currently, the trend among large platforms has been to offer cheaper plans with ads, a strategy that Disney already uses.
More and more users are turning to free services to reduce monthly spending on entertainment. At the same time, several streaming platforms have increased the price of their subscriptions in recent years.
Nielsen data shows that free platforms such as YouTube and Tubi accounted for 18.7% of television viewing time in the United States during April 2026. That figure represents growth compared to the 16.8% recorded in April 2025 and far exceeds the 12.7% observed in the same month of 2024.
This change in consumer habits could explain why companies like Disney are looking for new ways to attract an audience without depending solely on traditional subscriptions.
In the meantime, the company continues to test new features within its platform. One of them is Verts, a vertical video format designed to facilitate content discovery through personalized recommendations, with the aim of allowing users to explore a catalog that brings together more than a century of productions.
