Matias Almeyda has a new opportunity to coach in Europe. After leading the bench at AEK Athens, "Pelado" was able to make the jump to Spain. However, the Argentine would not take this step alone. Almeyda would seek the signing of Orbelín Pineda.
Sevilla has finalized the signing of Matías Almeyda. This is a big gamble for the Nervionense team. Sevilla needs a change of scenery. The Spanish team was one point away from relegation last season.
"Sevilla FC has reached an agreement with Matías Almeyda (September 21, 1973) for the Argentine coach to be the new red and white coach for the next three seasons, starting in July," the club announced.
However, Matías Almeyda would not take this step alone. The Argentine strategist would seek to secure the signing of trusted players to begin this new process in Spanish football. The Argentine is reportedly thinking about his "squire" Orbelín Pineda.
"Various reports indicate that the Argentine strategist, who recently left AEK Athens, has requested the incorporation of the Mexican player as one of his first requests," reports Azteca Deportes.
The camaraderie between Orbelín Pineda and Matías Almeyda already has several previous processes. "El Maguito" was in Almeyda's Chivas de Guadalajara, who won a Liga MX and a Conacacaf Champions League. "El Pelado" took Orbelín to AEK Athens, where they managed to lift a Greek league and a Greek Cup. This could be the third process in which both figures coincide in the locker room.
Orbelín Pineda's status
In July 2023, Orbelín Pineda was signed by AEK Athens from Celta de Vigo in Spain. The midfielder born in Coyuca de Catalán played 38 matches in his final season with the Greek club. In over 2,300 minutes on the pitch, Orbelín scored one goal and provided five assists for his teammates.
The former Cruz Azul player has a contract with AEK until June 2027. If Sevilla wants to sign the Mexican, the Spanish club must put forward an offer of at least $7.5 million (according to Transfermarkt valuations).
Orbelín Pineda continues to add appearances for the Mexican national team. "El Maguito" already has 79 appearances for El Tri and is currently competing in the Gold Cup. Pineda's value could increase with his good performance in this continental tournament.
