Mexican Marcelo Mayer says goodbye to the season with Boston by injury
Marcelo Mayer will have to undergo surgery to repair the damage to his wrist that he has been carrying since 2022
Marcelo Mayer arrived with good impressions in Boston in 2025, but the slugger will miss the rest of the season.
The Mexican infielder revealed this Sunday that he will have to undergo a wrist surgery that will cause him to miss the rest of the year with the Boston Red Sox.

“I gave it my all,” Mayer said. “Obviously, with the options I had, I could have had surgery when I got hurt or gotten a [cortisone] shot and tried to do everything possible to have the slightest chance to play again [this season]. Obviously, I'm very sad about what's happening and I want to play. I want to help the team win. But this is how it is for me right now.”
Mayer is batting .228 with 29 hits, 4 home runs, 10 RBIs and 20 runs scored in 44 games this season.
The Mexican, along with Roman Anthony, was one of the organization's best prospects debuting in the 2025 season.
Marcelo Mayer was struggling with wrist problems
The part of his wrist that was injured is the TFCC (Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex), which keeps the joint stabilized.
Mayer has dealt with a wrist injury since the 2022 season, his first full minor league campaign.
When I got hurt in Philadelphia, it didn't feel good at all, Mayer said. I got hurt in ’22. I got a cortisone shot in ’22. Normally, when you get a cortisone shot, the injury comes back later on. So I knew eventually I was going to have to do something with my wrist. I knew I was definitely going to consider it. The slugger said he tried to come back, but it hurt when he threw the ball long distances, and he still felt it when he swung in batting practice. Swing-wise, even dry swings hurt. So there’s not a lot of wiggle room. I had some good days, and then we hit a wall. We kept trying to work on it and get stronger, but nothing really helped, he said.
Boston is one of the American League teams with a good chance of reaching the postseason via the wild card.
