Three Mexicans will participate in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game
Kirk, Aranda and Munoz make history with their call-up to the 2025 MLB All-Star Game
For the first time in the history of Major League Baseball, three players born in Mexico will participate in the same All-Star Game. Alejandro Kirk, Jonathan Aranda, and Andrés Muñoz were named to the 2025 All-Star rosters this Sunday, marking an unprecedented milestone for Mexican baseball.
Kirk, a catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, and Muñoz, a closer for the Seattle Mariners, already know what it's like to attend this event, while Aranda, a first baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays, will be experiencing it for the first time. All three will represent the American League in the midseason classic.
Until this year, the record for most Mexicans named to a single All-Star Game was two. That mark was reached in 1986, 2010, and 2024. It had never been broken before... until now.
A little tricolor history at the All Star
In 1986, Fernando Valenzuela (Dodgers) and Teodoro Higuera (Brewers) starred in a memorable scene when they faced each other on the mound. Valenzuela pitched for the National League and Higuera for the American League, and it was in that duel that the Dodgers left-hander tied a record of five consecutive strikeouts, including Higuera himself.
In 2010, Joakim Soria and Yovani Gallardo were selected, but neither saw action in the game, despite 19 pitchers being used. The same thing happened in 2024 with Isaac Paredes and Andres Munoz; The former had an unsuccessful at-bat, while Seattle's pitcher didn't come out of the bullpen.
Now, with Aranda's inclusion, Mexico has 16 players born in the country who have made an All-Star roster. His call-up came as a backup to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., while Kirk repeats after his debut in 2022 and Munoz will be making his second consecutive appearance.
