Efraín Juárez leaves Liga MX and will coach in Hungary
Efraín Juárez will return to direct in Europe by accepting an offer from the Gyori ETO, ending his management with the UNAM Pumas
Efraín Juárez will return to Europe, but now he will do so at the head of a project in his first experience as a strategist in the Old Continent by accepting the offer of Gyori ETO from Hungary, leaving behind a process with the UNAM Pumas that was one step away from the Liga MX title.
Juárez, with this new project in the Old Continent, leaves behind a controversial management with the university squad where he directed for fifteen months, where he returned the identity to a team that has not managed to win the Liga MX title in the last fifteen years.
Efraín Juárez's time as technical director of the UNAM Pumas lasted 15 months, a cycle that spanned from March 2025 to June 8, 2026 and during this year, with three months, he managed to propel the cats to a performance that impacted and that returned strength and attitude to an organization that has spent recent years complaining.
Juárez was in charge of the university squad for 60 official games at the head of the university team, leaving very balanced numbers and a style of play that returned the prominence to the National University Club.
In these 60 games, they had 24 wins, 19 draws and 17 losses, achieving a runner-up finish in the Clausura 2026 tournament, where they were one step away from the title after falling in a very close series against Cruz Azul, but first they reached the overall leadership, as well as a ticket to the Concachampions in 2027.
Among other things, Juárez put together a competitive team with reinforcements such as Keylor Navas, Brazilian Juninho, Paraguayan Robert Morales and Santos Laguna forward Jordan Carrillo.
Now Juárez will begin the challenge at the Gyori ETO in Hungary. After his time at Pumas, in which he was successful until reaching the final, the Mexican coach decided to take on the challenge that European soccer represents, after being in negotiations with Mallorca, from Spain, and Maccabi Tel Aviv, from Israel.
The Hungarian club will qualify for the Champions League, with great opportunities to be in the best European competitions, one of the objectives for Efraín Juárez in this new challenge.
The Pumas, for their part, continue the search for the ideal coach to replace Juárez. Whoever arrives will have the mission of surpassing what the Mexican did in Clausura 2026, such as the institutional record of points in short tournaments of 17 days, the connection with the fans, and competing for the title.
