Wrigley Field will host the MLB All-Star Game in 2027
The historic Cubs stadium will host the event for the fourth time
Major League Baseball confirmed this Friday that the 2027 All-Star Game will be played at the iconic Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. The official date: July 13, 2027. The announcement was made by Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.
It will be the first time in 37 years that the Midseason Classic returns to Wrigley, where it had not been held since 1990. It will also be the first time in more than two decades that Chicago hosts the event, following the 2003 edition at the White Sox's stadium, then called US Cellular Field.
Wrigley Field, opened in 1914, is the second-oldest park in Major League Baseball, surpassed only by the Red Sox's Fenway Park (1912). The stadium is world-renowned for its ivy-covered walls and traditional atmosphere. It is, without a doubt, a place steeped in American baseball history.
Return of the Home Run Derby and a tribute to a legend
The 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field for the fourth time. In the three previous editions, the American League won all of them: 2-1 in 1947, 9-4 in 1962, and 2-0 in 1990.
In addition to the game, MLB will once again bring the Home Run Derby to the home of the Cubs. It will be only the second time it's been held there. In 1990, then-local icon Ryne Sandberg won the competition. Sandberg, a Hall of Famer and 1984 National League MVP, died Monday at the age of 65 after battling metastatic prostate cancer.
The 2027 event also promises to be a celebration of the club's history. Names like Ernie Banks, Andre Dawson, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, and Sammy Sosa will be part of the implicit tribute to the Cubs' rich baseball tradition.
The announcement also confirms the venue for the next two years: in 2026, the All-Star Game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. This year, the 95th edition was held at Truist Park in Atlanta, where the National League defeated the American League thanks to the first home run swing-off tiebreaker in the event's history.
