Carlos Alcaraz reigned once again in New York. The Murcian was crowned US Open champion for the second time in his career after defeating the Italian Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4 in a final that reaffirmed his status as the best tennis player in the world. With this victory, he also regains the number one spot in the ATP rankings two years later.

The 22-year-old tennis player now has six Grand Slam titles, two of them won this season (Roland Garros and US Open). Currently, among active players, only Novak Djokovic surpasses him in major achievements with 24.

A final that fuels the great rivalry of the new generation

The duel between Alcaraz and Sinner has become the axis of modern tennis. Both contested the finals of Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and now the US Open in 2025, something unprecedented in the history of the sport. Their rivalry began in New York in 2022, in a five-set marathon that opened an unforgettable chapter.

On this occasion, the Spaniard imposed his rhythm from the start. He aggressively broke Sinner's serve, taking advantage of the Italian's struggles on his first serve, which barely reached 48% effectiveness. The first set ended 6-2 for the Murcian.

Sinner reacted in the second set and took the set 6-3, with long rallies that unsettled Alcaraz. But the recovered number one showed his best form in the third set: he ran away with a 5-0 run 6-1 and left his opponent with no answers. The fourth set was more even, although the pressure eventually shifted to the Spanish side. In 2 hours and 42 minutes, Alcaraz closed out the final with a forehand winner that unleashed euphoria on Arthur Ashe.

"I gave it my all today. I couldn't have done more," admitted Sinner, resigned after his first loss in 27 Grand Slam matches on hard courts. Alcaraz, for his part, responded humorously: “I see you more than my family,” he said, alluding to the frequency with which they face each other.

Season of Domination

Alcaraz’s 2025 is turning out to be historic. He has a record of 61 wins and 6 losses (24-2 in Grand Slams) and a total of seven titles this year, including three Masters 1000s (Monte Carlo, Rome and Cincinnati) and two ATP 500s (Rotterdam and Queen's).

The Spaniard will leave New York with 11,540 ranking points, surpassing Sinner, who remains on 10,780 after leading for 65 weeks. In addition to sporting glory, Alcaraz took home a record prize of $5 million, while the Italian received $2.5 million for reaching the final.
