Edson Alvarez fights against adversities in Turkey
The Mexican acknowledged that this is the first time in his career that he has navigated such turbulent waters. Edson Alvarez does not escape criticism
Edson Alvarez's arrival at Fenerbahce seemed like an important step in his career. The Mexican left West Ham to join a big Turkish club that would play Champions League matches. However, the outlook is very different from what "Machin" imagined. Initially, as soon as Edson Alvarez arrived at the club, Fenerbahce was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League qualifying round. This was the first blow to the Aztec's decision. Since then, the club has undergone numerous managerial changes that have affected the team and Edson Alvarez himself.
“These events can affect the players. It's the first time I've experienced something like this. There's a lot of talk in the media, a lot of talk. Fenerbahce is a very big club, so it's normal. We have to forget about what's happening and focus on what's best. We want to play, have fun, and, of course, shine. We want to make the community happy,” Alvarez said at a press conference.
Fenerbahce's problems
In addition to being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, the first major blow to Alvarez's decision was the dismissal of Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach requested the signing of “Machin,” but was dismissed in September of this year. The position was assumed by Domenico Tedesco.
“We need to bring our experience to the field. We have many experienced players with strong characters on the team,” added Alvarez. Under Tedesco's technical direction, Fenerbahce has accumulated four wins, three draws, and one loss. These results have generated murmurs among the fans.
In addition to the first two blows that “El Machin” received after his arrival, Ali Koc stepped down as Fenerbahce president in October 2025. Sadettin Saran took over. Thus, in a matter of months, Edson Alvarez lost two star players in his hiring.
“We must forget about what happened. We need to focus on what's best, which is playing and having fun,” added the Mexican national team midfielder.
