England is stuck with Ghana: Group L will be defined on the last day
Ghana worried the English in a hard-fought 0-0 in Boston
Group L will arrive open to the last date of the 2026 World Cup. England could not transform its territorial dominance into an advantage and ended up drawing 0-0 with Ghana in Boston, a result that left both teams with four points and very close to securing a ticket to the round of 32, although it has not yet been confirmed.
The team led by Thomas Tuchel retained first place thanks to a better overall goal difference, but once again left the field without completely clearing up doubts about their offensive performance.
The English team took control from the beginning and pushed the game towards the rival field. Possession was almost completely British for long stretches of the first half, although the scenario never translated into clear chances or sustained situations within the area.
Ghana chose another path. Defensive order, compact lines and constant surveillance of Harry Kane. The English striker barely managed to enter the game and was isolated in front of a structure that avoided granting space between the lines.
The match lost continuity after a clash between Reece James and Jordan Ayew that forced the game to be stopped to attend to the Ghanaian attacker, who returned to the field with a bandage on his head. The interruption coincided with the hydration break and modified the rhythm that England had tried to impose until then.
The end of the first half summed up what had happened up to that point: neither team recorded shots between the three sticks and both Jordan Pickford and Benjamin Asare went through 45 minutes practically without interventions.
England reacted late and Ghana resisted
The resumption showed a more open development. Ghana began to find space to run and came close to surprising when Marvin Senaya gained the back of the English defense, although Djed Spence arrived in time to prevent the shot.
The English response appeared minutes later. Anthony Gordon forced Asare to intervene for the first time and opened a sequence in which England seemed to get closer to the goal. Shortly after, Kane tried a low shot from outside the area that again found a response from the Ghanaian goalkeeper.
When the match began to lean towards the European side, a new hydration break once again cut off the English momentum and generated annoyance among part of the audience present.
Ghana also found an opportunity to cause concern. Prince Adu led a promising counterattack, but Ezri Konsa anticipated just before the shot.
In the final minutes came the clearest options of the match. Bukayo Saka demanded a great response from Asare with a long shot, Nico O'Reilly hit the ball against the crossbar and, in the same action, Kane failed to convert after capturing the rebound inside the area.
England insisted until the end, but the defensive wall erected by Ghana at the Gillette Stadium resisted until the end and left the outcome of the group pending for the last day.
