Goals are love and Liga MX surpassed major European tournaments
521 goals were scored in the 2025 Apertura. Mexican soccer had a better scoring average than the major leagues of the Old Continent
Liga MX is one of the most important tournaments in all of Concacaf soccer. Mexican soccer is one of the main attractions at the continental level, and in recent championships it has delivered great spectacles and plenty of goals. According to information presented by Mikel Arriola, executive president of Liga MX and commissioner of the FMF, there was an increase in the number of goals scored in the Apertura 2025 tournament. A total of 521 goals were scored in the last tournament, representing a 9% increase compared to the previous tournament. On average, 3.1 goals were scored per match in Mexican soccer. Effective playing time also increased. In Liga MX, the ball was kept on the field for 56 minutes and 8 seconds per match. The scoring average in Mexican soccer surpassed records from major European leagues. France's Ligue 1 has averaged 2.96 goals per game; England's Premier League, 2.82 goals per game; Spain's La Liga, 2.56 goals per game; and Serie A, 2.56 goals per game. Major League Soccer also fell short with an average of 3.00 goals per game. Only the Bundesliga, of Europe's top five leagues, surpassed Liga MX's scoring average. In Germany, 3.14 goals have been scored per game in the 16 matchdays played so far this season. This statistic opens a debate about Mexican soccer: is offensive play prioritized in Mexico, or are there many defensive weaknesses in the league? MX?
