Nottingham Forest, the club where he was a legend, announced the tragic news
John Robertson, former Scottish footballer and Nottingham Forest legend, passed away this Thursday at the age of 72, as announced by the British club. John Robertson was a winger for the greatest Nottingham Forest side in history, winners of the UEFA Champions League in 1979 and 1980 under English manager Brian Clough.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Nottingham Forest legend and dear friend, John Robertson,” the club where he made history posted.
“A true club legend and two-time European Cup winner, John’s unparalleled talent, humility, and unwavering dedication to Nottingham Forest will never be forgotten,” the social media post continued.
Robertson played for the Midlands club for 14 seasons, from 1970 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1986, making over 500 appearances, and was instrumental in their promotion to the English First Division in 1977.
Furthermore, the winger provided the assist for Trevor Francis in the 1979 European Cup final against Swedish side Malmo (1-0), and was the only scorer in the 1980 final against German side Hamburg at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
During his successful spell at Forest, he won a Premier League title, two League Cups, a European Super Cup, and an FA Super Cup, in addition to the European Cups, while with the Scottish national team he played 28 matches and scored eight goals.
