Lando Norris wins in Brazil but remains cautious: “The championship can change very quickly”
British driver extends his lead in the standings, but says he doesn't feel close to the title
Lando Norris shone again at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British McLaren driver won this Sunday at the Interlagos circuit and reinforced his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship, although he avoided showing confidence regarding the title “No, not at all,” he replied when asked if he already saw himself as champion. The Brazilian race was the 21st of the season and resulted in an increasingly tight overall standings at the top. Norris, 25, secured his seventh victory of the year—the eleventh of his F1 career—and reached 390 points, 24 ahead of his teammate, Australian Oscar Piastri, and 49 ahead of Dutchman Max Verstappen. The Englishman won an intense race, with Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) in second place and Verstappen (Red Bull), a four-time world champion, completing the podium after a spectacular comeback from the pit lane despite suffering a puncture. A solid victory, but with self-criticism. Despite the triumph, Norris wasn't entirely satisfied. “I was quite disappointed that the car wasn't faster at Interlagos,” he admitted. The Briton acknowledged that Verstappen's pace made him reflect on how changeable the championship can be: “Seeing how fast Max was today, the championship can change very quickly.” The Briton explained that he plans to analyze areas for improvement with his team: “I'll probably go and see the team, congratulate them, and see where we weren't fast enough. But that's just me… I'll focus on myself, keep my head down, ignore everyone else, and keep pushing.” Meanwhile, Piastri finished fifth, just behind Briton George Russell (Mercedes), in a race where Spaniards Carlos Sainz (Williams) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) had no luck, crossing the finish line in 13th and 14th positions, respectively. Argentine Franco Colapinto (Alpine) finished in 15th place. Meanwhile, Frenchman Isack Hadjar (RB) stood out by finishing eighth, adding valuable points for his team.
