Review how Concacaf fared in the 2026 World Cup
The 206 World Cup ended early for the Concacaf teams. Only the hosts survived the group stage
The 2026 World Cup was held in Concacaf territory. The United States, Mexico and Canada relied on home field to have decent performances in the World Cup. The other Concacaf teams disappointed.
The Mexican team had a decent participation in the World Cup. El Tri surpassed the group stage with victories against South Africa 2-0, South Korea 1-0 and the Czech Republic 3-0. In the round of 32, El Tri beat Ecuador 2-0, but in the round of 16 they lost 2-3 against England.
Mexico had a good participation in the World Cup. Javier Aguirre's team kept a clean sheet until the round of 16. El Tri exceeded initial expectations.
The United States team also had a good start, but faltered at the end. The USMNT beat Paraguay 4-1, Australia 2-0 and lost 2-3 against Türkiye at the close of the first phase. In the round of 32 they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina, but in the round of 16 they were beaten by Belgium 1-4.
The United States had the wood to continue advancing in the 2026 World Cup. Belgium had not shown a devastating pace during the cup, but the extra-sporting factors ended up motivating the Vengeance and sinking the Americans.
The other host team was Canada. The Canadian team beat Switzerland 2-1 on the first day, beat Qatar 6-0 and on the last day they tied with Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-1. In the round of 32 they beat South Africa 1-0, but in the round of 16 they were beaten 3-0 by Morocco. This was the best historical participation of the Canadian team.
The rest of Concacaf in the 2026 World Cup
The other three Concacaf representatives in the 2026 World Cup were Panama, Haiti and Curacao. None of these teams were able to get past the group stage. In fact, none of them could win a game.
Panama lost 0-1 against Ghana, lost 0-1 against Croatia and then were defeated 0-2 against England.
Haiti had a similar performance. In their return to a World Cup after 1974, the Haitian team lost 0-1 to Scotland, were beaten 0-3 by Brazil and lost 2-4 to Morocco on the last day.
The third in contention was Curacao. The Curacao team was beaten 1-7 by Germany on the first day, then they got a valuable 0-0 draw against Ecuador, worse on the last day they were defeated again 0-2 by Ivory Coast.
