Lionell Thompson doesn't rule out Yarde against Benavidez: 'He's dangerous'
Lionell Thompson sees the duel between the two as very even because Yarde has heavy hands and that gives him an opportunity against Benavidez
Boxer Lionell Thompson doesn't rule out that the dangerous Anthony Yarde could pull off an upset when he faces David Benavidez, the World Boxing Council (WBC) 175-pound champion, this Saturday, November 22, in Saudi Arabia.
In In an interview with FightHype, Thompson sees the fight between the two as very even because Yarde has heavy hands, which gives him a chance against Benavidez. “Anthony Yarde is dangerous. He’s a dangerous opponent. He gave Artur a good fight. After being knocked out by Kovalev, he still gave Artur a good fight… Yarde has heavy hands. He even hurt Artur. I think Yarde has a chance. Absolutely. I think Yarde is much bigger, hits harder, and I think if Yarde lands some punches, he can be successful,” he said. “I see it as a draw. I don’t see David knocking Yarde out. I could be wrong, I could overwhelm him with his activity and take him out of there. But I think Yarde is much tougher… people say, ‘Oh, he’s been knocked out before.’ Yes, by two of the hardest hitters of this generation! David hasn’t had a knockout since, when?” He added.
According to experts, the British boxer is one of the most dangerous challengers David Benavidez will face at 175 pounds due to his great power. Despite this, the Mexican-American remains the favorite to win.
Remember that after Dmitry Bivol decided to vacate his WBC title, the Mexican Monster became the undisputed champion of the division and expressed interest in fighting Callum Smith or Anthony Yarde.
In the end, Yarde secured the challenger position, and this will be his third opportunity to try to become world champion.
The Mexican Monster, on the other hand, will make his first title defense after dominating David Morrell Jr. in his last appearance in the ring this past February. Anthony Yarde, 33, is coming off a victory over Lyndor Arthur last April and could now be crowned WBC light heavyweight champion. The English fighter has 27 wins (24 by knockout) and three losses. David Benavidez, 29, won the WBA regular 175-pound title after defeating David Morrell by decision in his last fight. The Mexican Monster boasts a record of 30 wins, 24 by knockout, and no losses in his professional career.
