Memphis Grizzlies traded Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers
An era that made the Grizzlies competitive in the NBA playoffs ends
The Memphis Grizzlies began a new stage in their sporting project after agreeing to transfer Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers, an operation that also involves a change of team for forwards Jerami Grant and Kris Murray. The move must still receive formal approval from the NBA.
The transfer represents one of the most relevant changes in the recent market and completely modifies the core that led Memphis to one of its most competitive moments in recent years. It also redefines the environment of the Mexican Karim López, who will now find a different scenario within the franchise structure.
For Portland, Morant's arrival represents a high-impact bet. The two-time All-Star point guard lands on a team that already currently has names like Jrue Holiday, Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson in similar positions, an accumulation of talent that opens questions about future moves within the organization.
The operation also occurs in a context of institutional changes for the Trail Blazers under the new ownership of Tom Dundon, owner who arrives after recently winning the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The definitive closing of an era in Memphis
Morant's departure also ends up dismantling the group that propelled the Grizzlies during the most promising cycle in recent years.
In the 2021-22 season, when Morant was chosen as Most Improved Player, Memphis reached 56 wins and tied the franchise's all-time record for wins. That team was built around a young core of Morant, Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane.
No one remains on the roster. Brooks left the team a season later and subsequently changed organizations twice. Bane was sent to Orlando last summer and Jackson ended up traded to Utah in February.
Morant leaves Memphis with averages of 22.4 points per game in his career, although his last three seasons were marked by limited availability: he played just 79 games between injuries and suspensions.
Among those episodes were a 25-game suspension after appearing on a live broadcast holding a gun while riding as a passenger in a vehicle, and another previous eight-game suspension after images were broadcast at a Denver-area nightclub. According to the data cited, both measures represented approximately $9 million in lost wages.
Meanwhile, Memphis adds immediate experience with Grant, who averaged 18.6 points last season and will become a member of his sixth NBA team. Murray arrives after recording 5.8 points per game with Portland.
For both franchises, the exchange marks more than a simple change of players: it redefines sporting directions and opens a new chapter for one of the most media names in the league.
