More “Europeans” arrive at the Tri concentration: Edson Álvarez, Jorge Sánchez and Mateo Chávez
Three elements of football from the Old Continent joined the concentration of the Mexican team for the friendlies prior to the 2026 World Cup
The Mexican team continues to take shape ahead of the 2026 World Cup and this Monday received important news with the incorporation of three footballers who play in Europe. Edson Álvarez, Jorge Sánchez and Mateo Chávez are already concentrated with the team led by Javier Aguirre to face the last stage of preparation towards the World Cup.
Through an official statement, the sports management confirmed the arrival of the players who played the season in Türkiye, Greece and the Netherlands.
“The sports management of national teams informs that the players Edson Álvarez, Mateo Chávez and Jorge Sánchez joined the concentration of the Mexican team,” reported the national team.
Edson Álvarez leads the Europeans who join El Tri
The arrival of Edson Álvarez represents one of the most relevant news for Javier Aguirre's coaching staff, since the Fenerbahce midfielder is considered one of the leaders of the Mexican team.
The Mexican footballer managed to recover from the ankle injury he suffered at the beginning of the year and, although he had little activity at the close of the Turkish Super League, he aims to be a key player in the 'Vasco' scheme.
Also joining him was Jorge Sánchez, defender of PAOK from Greece and another of the national coach's trusted men, despite the irregularities he showed during the European campaign.
Mateo Chávez gains prominence with the Mexican team
One of the names that generates the most expectations is Mateo Chávez, a 22-year-old Mexican winger who had an outstanding season with AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie.
The young defender established himself thanks to his consistency and will now seek to take advantage of the friendly matches to earn a definitive place on Mexico's World Cup roster.
His growth in European soccer has made him one of the most interesting prospects in Mexican soccer heading into the World Cup process.
Mexico's matches before the 2026 World Cup
The Mexican team will play three preparation matches before its World Cup debut on June 11 against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium.
The first match will be this Friday, May 22, against Ghana at the Cuauhtémoc Stadium in Puebla.
Subsequently, El Tri will travel to the United States to face Australia on May 30 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Finally, on June 4, Mexico will close its preparation for the World Cup by facing Serbia at the Nemesio Díez Stadium in Toluca.
Guillermo Ochoa already works with El Tri
With the additions of Edson Álvarez, Jorge Sánchez and Mateo Chávez, there are now four Mexican footballers who play abroad and work under the orders of Javier Aguirre.
The first to report was Guillermo Ochoa, who is also part of the group that began the concentration towards the 2026 World Cup.
It is expected that in the coming days the rest of those called up will be integrated to complete the squad that will face the final stretch of preparation before the World Cup.
