Sebastian Cordova, with his ups and downs, continues to get closer to Toluca
Toluca continues negotiating the arrival of Sebastian Cordova for the next Clausura 2026 tournament, but the talented player has a history that raises doubts
At a time when it seems that Toluca has no doubts about adding Sebastian Cordova to his ranks, not all opinions are favorable regarding the former Club America player's career, as some voices claim that he is a footballer with little attitude and a lack of enthusiasm for physical effort and sacrifice on the field. This was stated by former Cruz Azul and Necaxa goalkeeper Yosgart Gutierrez on his podcast "El Reportero," where he explained that they were teammates at Necaxa at one point, and things weren't always smooth sailing after Sebastian failed to find a place at America. "I had some disagreements with him because he didn't like to run, he didn't like to tackle, he didn't like physical contact, and I told him so. Perhaps in the heat of the moment during a match or training session, those disagreements arose, but he improved a lot afterwards," he said, referring to Sebastian's experiences at America and especially at Tigres.
Cordova's poor attitude at Necaxa wasn't the only place where he showed his negative side. America, seeking to develop him in their youth academy, loaned him to Alebrijes de Oaxaca, where he ended up clashing with coach Mario Garcia. This occurred at a time when the former America player arrived as part of a package deal with the Liga Expansion team, along with Jonathan "Cuba" Sanchez and Emilio Sanchez, players from the Aguilas' own youth system.
He then went to Necaxa before returning to America. Under Miguel Herrera, he experienced growth that led to his transfer to Tigres UANL, where he reached his peak in the Clausura 2023 tournament as a key player for the feline squad managed by Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi.
"I don't know if that situation is what's affecting him; I'm speaking without being in contact with him on a daily basis," Yosgart added during a FOX program.
His arrival in Toluca
For now, unofficial reports suggest that the player could join the current Mexican soccer champions to strengthen an already powerful midfield,He appears to be an interesting option for Antonio Mohamed's system, and it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement.
One point in Cordova's favor is that the sporting director of the Red Devils, Santiago San Roman, knows Sebastian very well. When the San Roman family was in charge of the Oaxaca team, he was brought in to contribute their quality, but he showed his negative side, so they already know who they would be taking to the Red Devils.
