Suriname at risk of being left out of the World Cup playoffs. Honduras to take over?
The Suriname national team is one step away from losing its place in the World Cup playoffs due to legal troubles of the country's Football Federation
The Suriname national team, which surprisingly secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup playoff against Bolivia to be held in Monterrey next March, risks losing its place due to legal problems facing its Football Federation.
Suriname's serious conflict could open the door for a remote possibility that the Honduran national team could take the Caribbean nation's place and face Bolivia in the playoff to determine who will face Iraq in the final qualifying round, also to be played in Monterrey in March.
Although there is the possibility that FIFA could decide to give Bolivia a direct berth to the match against Iraq, thus eliminating the CONCACAF team, this decision would violate the spirit of the World Cup qualifiers, where Caribbean or Central American teams fought on the field for a place in next year's tournament.
From According to unofficial reports regarding the possible elimination by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the Surinamese national team would be excluded because the international body prohibitions resolving their disputes in courts outside its jurisdiction. This comes as the Surinamese Football Federation (SVB) faces a serious crisis because the Caribbean nation's courts froze its accounts due to lawsuits filed by the Oldenstam and Kurban Groups, who lost the elections to lead the Surinamese football organization. This problem undoubtedly hits the national team hard, as in its CONCACAF qualifying group, it eliminated Guatemala and El Salvador, finishing only behind Panama, but in the overall standings, it barely surpassed Honduras. Therefore, there is a possibility that Bolivia, their opponent in the playoff in March in Monterrey, could advance directly without playing their match against Iraq, or else FIFA would allow Honduras to take their place in the competition. FIFA clearly prohibits government or civil court intervention in football in its regulations, as is currently the case in Suriname, and the SVB has already warned of the problems this situation could cause. The draw for the intercontinental playoff determined that Suriname will face Bolivia in March, with the winner then facing Iraq at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey. This match will determine one of the final teams to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Suriname is also currently facing sporting problems because its coach, Stanley Menzo, resigned, and the SVB (Suriname Football Federation) has not hired a replacement due to its frozen accounts resulting from the ongoing legal issues, which make it impossible to hire a new manager. Why is the Suriname Football Federation in trouble? The current conflict plaguing the Suriname national team stems from the two groups that lost the elections to lead the Federation. They filed a legal challenge in courts outside of FIFA, claiming there was a prohibition against holding elections. The current leadership maintains that everything was done in accordance with FIFA statutes. and that there are no problems of any kind.
Likewise, the SVB has stated in its press release that the members of these groups did not have valid membership status during its congress and their actions are in bad faith, seeking to obstruct the functioning of the organization.
So, the fate of Suriname and the possibility of Honduras winning the lottery for a possible participation against Bolivia in the World Cup playoff will be decided in the coming hours.
