Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid goalkeeper, becomes co-owner of the Spanish club
The Belgian goalkeeper expands his investments in European football and joins the Extremadura project that has four consecutive promotions
Thibaut Courtois, the Real Madrid goalkeeper, was announced as the new co-owner of CD Extremadura, a team that will play next season in the First Federation, the third category of Spanish football. The operation was carried out through an agreement between the Extremaduran club and the sports investment platform NXTPLAY, of which the Belgian goalkeeper is co-founder along with Gonzalo Vila.
The Almendralejo team comes to this institutional movement after achieving direct promotion to the First Federation, the fourth consecutive since its refoundation, after becoming champion of group IV of the Second Federation.

Courtois joins the shareholders of CD Extremadura along with Daniel Tafur
As reported by the club in an official statement, Thibaut Courtois joins the shareholding as co-owner along with the current president, Daniel Tafur, who will continue to lead the sporting and institutional project.
"The operation, which has been working on for almost a year, closes at a historic moment for the club: CD Extremadura has just signed its fourth consecutive promotion and returns to the First Federation, a record in Spanish football that confirms the solidity of the sporting and institutional project," highlighted the Extremaduran entity.
With this move, CD Extremadura becomes the second club in which NXTPLAY invests, after its foray into Le Mans, a squad that recently achieved promotion to Ligue 1 of French football.
“This double success places both clubs in the NXTPLAY ecosystem moving up a category in the same season,” stressed the Spanish club.
The new Extremadura project aims to return to professional football
The board considers that the next campaign will be the most ambitious since the club was refounded. Both the sports area and the new partners are already working on planning the season with the aim of consolidating institutional and sports growth.
"We welcome NXTPLAY, Thibaut Courtois and Gonzalo Vila to CD Extremadura. We have spent four years rebuilding this club from its foundations, with a team that has believed in the project from day one and a fan that has never stopped pushing," declared Daniel Tafur.
The president added that the arrival of the platform represents the “natural consequence” of the work done so far and highlighted its “global vision and real ambition.”
"What begins now is not a change of course, but an accelerator of the course we already had. And it is the best possible news for the fans who have been dreaming for years of returning Extremadura to its rightful place," he concluded.
Thibaut Courtois explains why he decided to invest in Extremadura
For his part, the Belgian goalkeeper explained the reasons behind his arrival at the Extremaduran project and made it clear that they seek to enhance an already consolidated structure.
"We invest where we see authentic projects, people who know what they are doing and real potential to build something great. CD Extremadura fulfills all three things," said Thibaut Courtois in a statement released through social networks.
In addition, he highlighted the identity of the club and the growth it has shown in recent years.
"Extremadura is a club with a history in Spanish football, an extraordinary fan base and a board that has shown year after year how to build a serious project. We come as partners to add to what is already working, and to accompany the club in the most demanding season that lies ahead," he added.
The reconstruction of CD Extremadura
Founded in 1924 and refounded in June 2022 under the presidency of Daniel Tafur, CD Extremadura managed to position itself once again as one of the fastest growing projects in recent Spanish football.
In addition to the four consecutive promotions, the club won the Federation Cup in 2024 and had an outstanding participation in the Copa del Rey, eliminating Las Palmas before losing by the narrowest margin against Sevilla.
In parallel, the new owners continue to expand their presence in the international sports industry. The platform specialized in sports investment, media and entertainment also participates in projects such as the E1 Series, the world electric motorboat championship, through the Sierra Racing Club franchise, in addition to collaborating with global brands linked to sports and lifestyle such as Oakberry.
