AirTag 2: Improvements, price, and availability of Apple's flagship tracking device
The new generation of AirTags is now available through the Apple online store
Apple presented the new generation of AirTag this Monday, its compact tracker for locating everyday objects such as keys, backpacks, or luggage, with a clear focus on improving what matters most in this type of accessory: range, accuracy, and ease of location. The company claims the device now allows you to find items faster thanks to enhanced precision finding performance and an internal redesign that strengthens its audible presence when it's time to "set it off." AirTag 2: More Range and Better Findability The biggest leap in this updated version is how it locates items, as Apple has incorporated its second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the same one found in the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and several recent Apple Watches. In practice, this means Precision Finding guides you from up to 50% farther away than the previous generation, using haptic, visual, and audio feedback to lead you directly to your keys or lost backpack. In addition, there's a key upgrade for everyday use: an improved Bluetooth chip that extends the range in which you can locate objects. And for the first time, Apple is enabling Precision Finding from the watch: if you have an Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or an Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, you can use the watch to find your AirTag (with watchOS 26.2.1).
An important detail: Precision Finding (via UWB) does not work in countries or regions where Ultra Wideband technology is restricted.
50% Louder Speaker and New Sound
If your AirTag has ever gotten buried between sofa cushions or at the bottom of a bag, you're going to love this: the new internal design makes the AirTag 50% louder than before. According to Apple, you can now hear it from up to twice the distance compared to the previous generation, and it also has a new, distinctive chime to make it easier to identify.
The combination of increased volume with improved Precision Finding directly addresses that typical "I know it's here, but I can't see it" moment. In other words:Less time wandering around the house and more time walking out the door stress-free.
Price and Availability
The new AirTag costs $29 each and $99 for a four-pack, the same as its predecessor, and retains free personalized engraving when purchased from apple.com or the Apple Store app. It can be ordered starting today in the Apple Store app and will arrive in Apple Stores "later this week"; it will also be available from authorized resellers.
On the software side, there's some fine print: the new AirTag requires an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26 or later, plus an Apple Account signed in to iCloud (and some features depend on having Find My enabled). And if you want the Precision Finding feature on Apple Watch, you need Series 9 or later or Ultra 2 or later, with watchOS 26.2.1.
Because it maintains the same form factor, the new AirTag is compatible with existing accessories (for example, the FineWoven Key Ring), and Apple also highlights sustainability improvements such as 85% recycled plastic in the enclosure and 100% fiber-based packaging. If you want to complete the set, the AirTag FineWoven Key Ring costs $35 and comes in colors such as fox orange, midnight purple, navy, moss, and black.
