Gasoline could have its lowest price this year since 2020
A specialist company predicts that gasoline will reach $2.97 per gallon this year, on average, in the US, the lowest price since 2020
After years of high prices and tight budgets, drivers in the United States could receive unexpected relief when filling up their tanks. The latest projections indicate that gasoline will move to levels not seen for more than five years. This change is due to a combination of energy and economic factors that are altering the landscape for millions of households. According to a new analysis by GasBuddy, the average price of gasoline in the United States could reach $2.97 per gallon this year. That figure represents a drop of 13 cents compared to the 2025 average. If this trend is confirmed, it would be the lowest level recorded since 2020. The decline is not accidental. GasBuddy explains that the end of 2025 already showed clear signs of relief, when the national average price fell below $3 per gallon. Among the main reasons are strong refinery production, lower oil prices, a robust crude supply, and weaker seasonal demand. “It’s not a return to ultra-cheap fuel, but for the first time in a long time, the wind is clearly at the back of drivers,” said Patrick De Haan, chief petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, in the company’s statement. Although the annual average is shaping up to be below $3, prices won’t remain static. GasBuddy anticipates a year with normal movements and some shocks. Factors such as weather, seasonal demand, and geopolitical risks will continue to influence the market. According to forecasts, gasoline could rise to nearly $3.20 per gallon between spring and early summer. After June, prices are expected to decline, averaging around $2.83. This behavior is consistent with the usual pattern, in which prices rise when demand increases and fall during months of lower consumption. The actual impact on consumers will depend on the state where they live. In regions like the Gulf Coast and the South,Prices would remain comfortably below $3 for much of the year. States like Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana are among the most affordable, with averages ranging from $2.43 to $2.73 per gallon. The situation is different in other areas. In California, for example, GasBuddy projects average prices that could range from $4.19 to $4.66. Hawaii and Washington are also among the states with the most expensive gasoline. In the Northeast and in large cities like Chicago, drivers could see prices above the national average. Even so, the overall outlook is more favorable than in recent years. GasBuddy estimates that American households will spend an average of $2,083 on gasoline during the year, a slight reduction from last year's spending. For many families, this savings can make a difference in the monthly budget. Diesel vehicle drivers would also get a little relief. The national average price of diesel is projected at $3.55 per gallon, down from $3.62 in 2025. Although the decrease is moderate, it represents a positive sign for those who depend on this fuel for work or transporting goods.
