An 83-year-old man was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, for allegedly stabbing a woman inside a senior living complex, police authorities reported on Monday.

The suspect, John Gula, is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder after the violent attack that occurred at the Rebecca Towers building, located at 150 Alton Road, in the heart of South Beach.

The victim was bleeding from the chest and head.

Officers responded to the scene after receiving a report of a knife attack inside the building. Upon arrival, they found the victim with a knife wound to the torso, in addition to a possible laceration to the back of the head. According to the police report, the woman was bleeding profusely from her chest and head.

She was immediately transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where she was admitted in stable condition.

Police collected witness statements and reviewed security camera footage, which allegedly captured Gula taking a folding knife from his pocket and attacking the woman after a conversation in the entrance of his apartment, where his girlfriend was also present.

According to the report, the victim managed to struggle with the attacker and throw the knife down the hallway, but Gula followed her and pulled out a second knife, trying to lunge at her again from behind.

A witness claimed to have heard the screams and seen the woman running, covered in blood, while calling for help. Another witness indicated that Gula was covered in blood on his pants, minutes after the incident.

The attack was allegedly triggered by an argument between the two, after the victim went to talk to Gula about a failed inspection of her apartment and its condition. This version was corroborated by witnesses and building employees, according to the police report.

One of the witnesses managed to get the victim into his apartment while another person called 911.

Gula was located and arrested shortly after the attack. He was booked into county jail and appeared in court Tuesday, where the judge ordered him held without bail pending his next court hearing.
