Abuse and lack of medical care reported in detention centers in Florida: Its all dirty
Three immigrant detention centers in Florida are being denounced for inadequate medical care, overcrowding, and abusive treatment.
A Honduran immigrant, who was recently deported to her country, still has nightmares about the days she had to remain in detention centers located in Florida. The woman reports that she suffered overcrowding and lack of medical attention, in addition to being imprisoned in deplorable conditions.
"Rosa," as she preferred to be called to protect her identity, made a living in Miami doing home renovations, but ended up arrested by ICE agents after committing a traffic violation. She was later transferred to the Krome North Service Processing Center.
"It's an all-male prison, and they put me in a cooler with 30 women; everything was very dirty. The first night we slept on the floor," the immigrant recounted in a Noticias Telemundo report. Two days later, she was taken to the Broward Transitional Center, also in Florida.
She also showed the pills for depression and anxiety that were offered to her at the same detention center, stating that both psychological conditions were caused by her deportation process.
The abuses Rosa reports were documented in the report "You feel like your life is over," released by Human Rights Watch, a non-governmental organization dedicated to defending and promoting human rights.
The text states: "Inadequate medical care, overcrowding, abusive treatment, and lack of legal and psychological help in three detention centers located in South Florida."
Rosa currently lives with her mother in Honduras, but she experiences the same fears that drove her to leave her country 12 years ago and pursue the so-called "American dream." "I suffered sexual abuse, they threatened to kill me because they wanted to turn me into a prostitute, and I left out of fear," she said.
However, she has no choice but to face those fears and protect herself and her mother, because returning to the US is not an available option, at least for now.
