Lina Luaces defends her triumph in Miss Cuba after criticism of not having been born on the island
Lili Estefan’s daughter continues sending messages seeking to make people understand why she deserves to be Miss Cuba
Lina Luaces, who is 21 years old and is the daughter of Lili Estefan, is in the eye of the controversy for her victory in Miss Cuba.
Her triumph was accompanied by various comments that claimed that the Estefans had paid for her crown or that she did not deserve to represent the island because she was not born there and because Spanish is not her first language either.
The accusations against her have provoked a barrage of reactions from those around her, but also from herself, as reflected in a recent statement in Spanish and English that she posted on her social media.
In her text, which she titled 'July 11', Lina hinted that she is as Cuban as any other woman born on the Caribbean island, by assuring that she is very proud of her roots.
“I was not born on the island, but the island was born in me. I grew up listening to stories that don't fit in books: of the heat that burns, but also that embraces, of the fear disguised as silence, of the hope that never went out,” reads the beginning of the text that she shared and set to music with the song 'Patria y Vida' by Gente de Zona.
She titled her text 'July 11', since on that day, but in 2021, historic protests by the Cuban people were recorded in against the island's government, thereby wanting to show that, despite the distance and not having been born there, she has always stood by her countrymen, and not just when she had the opportunity to represent the island at Miss Universe.
“That day, July 11, my people shouted what many had kept quiet for decades. They shouted for those who can't, for those who left, for those who continue to dream of returning,” continued the daughter of Lorenzo Luaces.
The young woman concluded her text by assuring us that, despite being in Miami, she will always be with the people who remain in Cuba fighting for themselves and their rights.
“My blood carries your scars, your music, your strength. Although the sea separates us, my heart marches with you,” concluded the beautiful model, who already has more than 340,000 followers on Instagram.
