Sheinbaum says Mexican flag used in US protests could be "a provocation"
Mexican president says photo of person on top of burning patrol car with Mexican flag is
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that it is "likely" that the use of the Mexican flag during protests against migrant raids in the United States will be seen as "a provocation." referring specifically to the photograph showing a hooded man on top of a burned patrol car holding the Mexican flag in Los Angeles.
“We do not agree with the violent actions and I think that even some of the photographs that came out were very likely a provocation,” the Mexican president expressed during her press conference, while indicating that she would need “to have all the information” to affirm this fact with certainty.
She acknowledged, in this sense, that the image of the “person on top of a burned patrol car with the Mexican flag” is “very provocative,” but that it is up to the US authorities to investigate this event.
The Mexican leader’s response comes after the image of a hooded man on top of a patrol car during protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles, the city with the largest Mexican community abroad, went viral on social media.
In fact, the Department Homeland Security (DHS) shared the photograph arguing the presence of "illegal aliens" in California.
Regarding the violence framed in these mobilizations in the United States, Sheinbaum mentioned that "in general the Mexican community demonstrates peacefully for their rights" and reiterated her condemnation of any violent demonstration.
Precisely, this Wednesday, she received the US Undersecretary of State, Christopher Landau, at the National Palace in the Mexican capital amid bilateral tension due to recent statements by the US Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, who accused Sheinbaum of inciting the protests in Los Angeles, something rejected as "absolutely" false by the president.
