Bernie Sanders asks Platner to withdraw from Senate race in Maine after sex scandal
The senator changed his position after new accusations, after having publicly supported the candidate days before
Senator Bernie Sanders surprised this Tuesday by recommending that Graham Platner abandon his candidacy for the Senate in Maine, after new accusations against him emerged.
"I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. Given these serious accusations, I have recommended that he withdraw," Sanders said in a statement that reached the La Opinión editorial office.
The statement represents a 180-degree turn in the legislator's position, since just a few days before he had publicly reiterated his support for the oyster farmer and war veteran, considered until now one of the main Democratic candidates to face Republican Senator Susan Collins.
A change of posture in a week
Until last week, Sanders downplayed the controversy surrounding Platner and called for focusing the debate on the economic problems facing Americans.
"People can't afford health care. They can't buy food. They can't afford to put gas in their cars. I think it would be a good idea to focus on the important issues facing working families in Maine and this country," he told the AP.
When reporters asked him if he still supported Platner, he responded bluntly: "Of course. Why wouldn't I?"
Democratic race remains uncertain
Sanders' recommendation changes the panorama of one of the most watched senatorial elections heading into the next elections.
Graham Platner was seeking the Democratic nomination to compete against Susan Collins, who is seeking a sixth term and represents a key piece for the balance of forces in the Senate.
After the accusations became known, several Democratic legislators began to distance themselves. While some avoided commenting, others, such as Senator Adam Schiff, indicated that they will wait to know more details before setting a position.
So far, Platner has campaign activities scheduled, including an event in Bar Harbor with Congressman Ro Khanna and other Maine Democratic candidates.
