David Benavidez explained that the fight with Canelo Alvarez is something fans have been waiting for and assured that it will break records
David Benavidez, the World Boxing Council (WBC) 175-pound champion, believes that the fight with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will happen in 2026 and will be bigger than the fight that The Guadalajara native starred against Gennady Golovkin.
In an interview with Salvador Rodriguez on ESPN Knockout, Benavidez explained that the fight with Canelo Alvarez is something fans have been waiting for and assured that it will break records.
“Look, the fight with Canelo is more alive than ever. I think in 2026 it could be even bigger than anything we've seen, even bigger than Canelo vs. GGG. Fans have been waiting for this Mexican showdown, and with all the changes boxing is experiencing right now, it's going to happen. Right now I'm focused on building my legacy. Yes, everyone wants to see me fight Canelo. It's the fight that could break records,” he said.
Remember that for three years David Benavidez was the official challenger and tried every possible way to get the attention of the Mexican four-division champion, but never received a response.
Furthermore, the fighter from Guadalajara stipulated that he would only accept the fight if offered a purse of $200 million and a rehydration clause, as he believed his opponent might have a weight advantage. The Mexican Monster agreed to accept the minimum purse and let the fighter from Guadalajara keep almost all the earnings, hoping he would be given the opportunity, but Benavidez continued to ignore him and complained about the way Benavidez requested the fight. The Mexican-American opted to move up to 175 pounds, becoming the mandatory challenger and then the WBC champion after Dmitry Bivol relinquished the belt to complete the trilogy with Artur Beterbiev. For now, Benavidez will face Anthony Yarde on November 22 to defend his title and then hopes to fight the Russian. In contrast, Canelo Alvarez has been criticized in recent years for choosing opponents from lower weight classes or opponents he can beat. In fact,In his recent fight against Terence Crawford—who moved up two weight classes to face him—he lost his undisputed 168-pound championship. David Benavidez, 29, captured the WBA regular 175-pound title from David Morrell after winning by unanimous decision. The Mexican Monster boasts a record of 30 wins, 24 by knockout, and no losses in his professional career. Meanwhile, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, 35, lost his undisputed 168-pound championship to Crawford in a historic fight. The Mexican now has a record of 63 wins (39 by knockout), three losses, and two draws in his professional career.
