Nicolás Larcamón signs a contract with Sporting de Gijón until 2027
Through an official statement, Sporting de Gijón confirmed the hiring of Nicolás Larcamón, who signed a contract until June 2027, with the possibility of extending it for one more season depending on sporting objectives.
Negotiations between both parties took place in recent weeks, after Borja Jiménez notified the board of his intention to terminate early the contract he had with the Spanish institution.
The Asturian club highlighted the international experience of the Argentine coach and expressed its confidence in the project that he will lead for the next campaign.
Larcamón's time at Cruz Azul ended before the championship
Larcamón's time with Cruz Azul came to an end after a difficult streak of nine consecutive losses, a situation that led to his departure before concluding the regular phase of the tournament.
After his departure, Joel Huiqui took control of the team on an interim basis and managed to lead La Maquina to the Liga MX title just seven games later. However, a large part of the base of the champion team was formed during the process led by the Argentine strategist.
The celestial board opted for a profound renovation under the management of Larcamón, who left a competitive squad that ended up lifting the championship at the end of the season.
Larcamón will live his first experience in European football
At 41 years old and originally from La Plata, Argentina, Nicolás Larcamón built a large part of his career in Latin American soccer before making the leap to Europe.
The coach coached clubs such as Deportivo Anzoátegui in Venezuela, as well as the Chilean teams Deportes Antofagasta, Huachipato and Curicó Unidos. Later he came to Mexican soccer to coach Puebla, León, Necaxa and Cruz Azul.
One of his greatest achievements came in 2023, when he won the Concacaf Champions League with León. Later, he also managed to compete in the Intercontinental Cup during his most recent stage at Cruz Azul.
Sporting de Gijón bets on Larcamón to fight for promotion
The arrival of Nicolás Larcamón represents an important commitment by Sporting de Gijón, a club that will seek to return to the highest category of Spanish football.
The red and white board considers that the offensive profile and management capacity of the Argentine coach can be key to competing for promotion in LaLiga Hypermotion during the coming seasons.
With this move, Larcamón joins the list of Argentine coaches who have found opportunities in European soccer after standing out in Liga MX and in different leagues on the American continent.
