“Donald Trump will try to interfere in our elections,” warns Democrat Robert Garcia
Congressman Robert Garcia affirms that President Donald Trump intends to impose requirements to exclude millions of people from the elections
Robert Garcia, representative for California, assures that, given the loss of citizen support for the Republican Party and its candidates, President Donald Trump will end up interfering in the midterm elections to be held in November.
The Democrat born in Lima, Peru, bases his warning on the pressure that the New York magnate exerts on Congress to achieve approval of the American Voter Eligibility Protection Act (SAVE America), through which it is intended to require Americans to prove their citizenship when registering to vote, making it mandatory to present a valid identification or else they would be denied the possibility of voting.
Faced with this situation, Democrats, including Robert Garcia, agree that the new requirement would deprive millions of people of the right to vote, including married women, since their maiden names do not appear on their official identification documents, which closes their route to access the polls.
"A frontal attack against our electoral process is coming. It has already begun, but we are also preparing and, in support of the American people, we are ready to face it," said the man who at the time was the first openly LGBT mayor of Long Beach, California, in an interview with the MS NOW television channel.
So far, the controversial bill that was approved by the House of Representatives in February is stalled in the Senate.
However, Trump has made signing the so-called bipartisan housing bill conditional on Congress first passing the SAVE America Act.
"There is no doubt that Donald Trump will try to interfere in our elections. He has already tried to steal a presidential election. He has already tried to interfere with local voter registrars. He will use every resource at his disposal, every tool he has," Garcia reiterated.
The 48-year-old Democrat's proposal to counteract the pressure exerted from Washington is that members of his party and citizens unite to prevent conditioning the vote, as he has the support of legal experts.
"There are already organizations mobilized on the ground. We have been working with legal teams across the country to make sure we are prepared," he emphasized.
