Guatemalan construction worker is deported and separated from his family: "I come back shattered"
The Guatemalan citizen mentioned that his wife and 4 children remain in the United States
A Guatemalan citizen who resided in the United States and worked in the construction sector shared on social media the difficult moment he is experiencing after being deported. In a video he shared on TikTok, the man tearfully recounted that he had been sent back to his country, while his wife and children remain in the United States.
The recording, released on September 9, shows the worker narrating how his daily life suddenly changed with his arrest and subsequent deportation. He explained that his family was torn apart overnight, which he described as a devastating experience that left him "with my body in Guatemala, but my heart and mind in the United States."
The migrant's experience after his return
The man, a father of four children, said that he was detained a few days earlier by immigration authorities. However, he did not provide further details regarding his life in the United States, his legal status, or the reason for his detention.
According to the Central American, just a few days after his arrest, he was returned to his country, which indicates a clear case of an express deportation.
In the same video, he mentioned that his entire life had been left in the United States, where he had been working and building a home for years. He even mentioned part of his routine with his family, where his youngest children would wait for him every afternoon when he returned from work, a routine that was abruptly broken.
In his testimony, he expressed the difficulty of explaining to them why he would no longer be able to return home or share everyday moments as before. One of the hardest phrases he remembered was one of his sons asking him: "Daddy, when are you coming?".
In his message, he also urged other migrants not to lose hope and to overcome the difficulties that deportation processes generate, no matter how hard they may be.
The impact on the digital community
The story spread quickly on social media,Accumulating thousands of reactions and messages of support from people who sent him words of encouragement from different places. Many users highlighted the harshness of the testimony and pointed out that it reflects the reality of thousands of migrant families who face forced separations due to U.S. immigration policy.
In subsequent posts, the worker even showed the little he received upon arriving in Guatemala after being deported: a small bag with bottles of water and some snacks, which for him symbolized the harshness and coldness of the process. The audience's reaction was immediate, with messages calling for more humane solutions and options so that families are not torn apart.
Express Deportations: How They Work
The case of the Guatemalan migrant adds to thousands of deportations carried out each year under processes known as "expedited removals" or express deportations. These procedures allow immigration authorities to immediately expel undocumented individuals or individuals with active removal orders, without the need for a lengthy hearing before an immigration judge.
The goal, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is to reduce costs and expedite detention times. However, migrant advocacy organizations warn that these practices increase cases of family separation and leave deported individuals with limited resources and without adequate support upon returning to their countries of origin.
