The fight recorded on May 31 at the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center, which left seven people dead and one more injured, once again put the security and governance conditions of one of the most questioned prisons in the country under the microscope.

According to state authorities, the confrontation occurred during the early hours of the morning in module 7 of the penitentiary center.

After the events, state and federal corporations deployed a review operation at the facilities to reinforce security measures and initiate the corresponding investigations.

The recorded violence adds to a long history of incidents in Aguaruto, a prison that for years has been the scene of escapes, finds of weapons, clandestine tunnels, communication equipment and various illicit privileges attributed to criminal groups.

Among the most remembered episodes is the massive escape of inmates that occurred during the events of the so-called “Culiacanazo” in 2019. In addition, the penitentiary center faces overpopulation problems that have complicated its operation and control.

As part of the actions after the fight, security elements carried out an inspection in one of the prison modules, where they located and seized 109 doses of cocaine, four cell phones, chargers, mobile phone chips, an internet modem, handmade sharp objects, a scale and a mini solar panel.

The recent findings show the persistence of the entry and use of prohibited objects within the penitentiary center, a problem that has been documented recurrently in recent years through various reviews carried out by state and federal authorities.

While investigations continue into the fight and the circumstances that allowed drugs and communication equipment to enter the prison, the case reopens the debate about security conditions, overcrowding and the ability of the authorities to maintain control within the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center.
