Israel bombs southern Beirut suburbs during new truce
The Israeli Army says it has intercepted two projectiles fired from Lebanon during a new offensive
The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced this Sunday in a statement that his armed forces have bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahye and a stronghold of the Shiite group Hezbollah, being the first attack against the Lebanese capital since the agreement of a new ceasefire agreed in Washington last Thursday.
“In accordance with the directive of Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF, the army) attacked the terrorist headquarters in the Dahye neighborhood of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah's shooting against Israeli territory,” the statement from the president's office stated. The Israeli army also reported this Sunday that it had intercepted two projectiles fired from Lebanon towards its territory, despite the ceasefire agreement announced this week to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
After warning sirens sounded in two towns in northern Israel, “two projectiles that crossed the border from Lebanon into Israeli territory were intercepted,” an army statement said. (afp, Reugters)
Two Israeli soldiers fighting in southern Lebanon die
The Israeli Army announced last night the death of two soldiers fighting in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire agreed between the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah at the beginning of the week.
The two soldiers, Shahar Gamla and Ohad Yaari, died in separate incidents, the Israeli military confirmed. The first, a 23-year-old deputy company commander in the Egoz Unit of the Commando Brigade, succumbed to his injuries after being “seriously injured” on Thursday in Lebanese territory by the “impact of a suspected aerial target.”
The second, a 21-year-old soldier from the Shaked Battalion of the Givati Brigade, died in an incident into which the Army opened an investigation. Both “fought with supreme heroism to protect the northern communities and citizens of Israel, and their sacrifice and bravery will forever be etched in our hearts,” the Israeli prime minister said in a statement.
