Leo XIV condemns the use of “increasingly inhuman” measures against immigrants
This is his sharpest criticism yet of hardline immigration policies, in an indirect message to Donald Trump
Pope Leo The statement comes after previous remarks in which the pontiff questioned whether supporting the “inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States” could be reconciled with a “pro-life” stance, linking the issue directly to core principles of Catholic social teaching. Leo XIV warned during his address that “when vulnerable migrants are abused, national sovereignty is not being legitimately exercised, but rather,” he said, “serious crimes are being committed or tolerated by the State.” "Increasingly inhuman measures, even politically celebrated, are being taken to treat these 'undesirables' as if they were waste and not human beings. Christianity, on the other hand, refers to the God of love, who makes us all brothers and sisters and asks us to live as such," he stressed. “States have the right and the duty to protect their borders, but this must be balanced with the moral obligation to provide refuge,” the Holy Father said, echoing Church teaching reflected in the Catechism.
On the other hand, the American pontiff considered it “encouraging” that popular movements, civil society organizations and the Church are confronting these new forms of dehumanization.”
Leo XIV asserted that “feeding the hungry, giving shelter to the homeless, helping the shipwrecked, caring for children, generating employment, facilitating access to land and building living beings” is not ideology but means “truly living the Gospel.”
The comments came after Pope Leo physical well-being, almost an idolatry of the body, in which the mystery of pain is reduced to something totally inhuman.'This attitude leads to dependence on painkillers and deadly drugs like opioids and fentanyl, especially in the United States, he said.
